This form of leadership is common in many healthcare institutions. This strategy portrays several strengths for leading others. This leadership style encourages “individuals to establish positive relationships with one another” (Suliman, 2009, p. 305). A transformational leader is usually “charismatic and visionary” (Suliman, 2009, p. 304). Such a leader acts competently and confidently whenever dealing with different adversities. These leaders embrace the power of teamwork. A transformational leader empowers his or her employees to produce the best goals. These leaders also “use open communication to support their workers” (Kouzes & Posner, 2009, p. 21).

Transformational leaders encourage their workers to remain accountable and responsible. They also gather relevant feedback from their employees. Such feedbacks are useful whenever making positive organisational decisions and choices. Transformational managers promote the power of teamwork. This practice “makes it easier for such managers to focus on new processes and quality improvement strategies” (Marquis & Huston, 2012, p. 76). Many transformational leaders use empathy to motivate, empower, and mentor their workers. Nurse leaders should use the best competencies whenever supporting their caregivers.

Challenges Affecting Different Leaders

Many leaders encounter various obstacles in their respective institutions. Many leaders encounter numerous challenges. To begin with, leadership is a serious practice because it brings more people together. Some nurses and clinicians might have specific issues. This situation will affect the goals of different employees. Leaders should always be ready to achieve the best goals. Some leaders encounter difficulties whenever motivating their teams. Clinicians “should improve their skills in an attempt to achieve their best goals” (Marquis & Huston, 2012, p. 79). Many employees have remained resistant to new changes and ideas. This issue has affected the performance of many workers.

Managers encounter numerous criticisms from their fellow leaders and employees. Some individuals will criticise every idea or mission. Some individuals lack appropriate resources that can widen their leadership competencies. Organisational conflicts also make it possible for leaders to achieve their goals. The unpredictability of people’s expectations can become a major challenge (Christmas, 2009). Every leadership style requires new technological ideas and equipment.

Achieving Better Leadership Competencies: Personal Goals and Plans

Individuals should improve their leadership competencies using various strategies. One of the best goals is to formulate and develop appropriate leadership philosophies. Organisational managers must engage in different leadership exercises to improve their skills. Leaders “should embrace powerful competencies such as cohesiveness, objectiveness, and decisiveness” (Christmas, 2009, p. 130). They must also embrace new listening and communication skills. Time management is also a useful leadership skill. Organisational leaders should combine various ideas to produce powerful leadership philosophies. Such philosophies will support their career goals.

How “a leader supports his employees determines their performance, productivity, and morale” (Christmas, 2009, p. 131). This practice also affects the quality of patient support and care.
