Types of Thinking Styles

The world is modeled by human beings through thinking. One has to understand the meaning of the word thinking in order to differentiate and know why people do things the way they do. Many scholars define the word thinking. Thinking was defined as the process of using the mind to make ideas or decisions (Brian, 2009: 15). These ideas or decisions made are used to model the world. Many scholars come up with different types of thinking styles. It was discussed and concluded that there are three main types of thinking styles. They include logical thinking, persuasive thinking and scientific thinking (Brian, 2009:18). Persuasive thinking is defined as a process of influencing someone to agree to one’s message. Scientific thinking is defined as the process of expanding knowledge about things in nature or in the universe. Logical thinking involves reasoning consistently (Brian, 2009:20). This paper seeks to analyze logical thinking and compare and contrast it to the others.

As defined above, in logical thinking one reason consistently. Its basis is consequential thought. Facts, ideas and conclusions about a problem are arranged in a chain-like manner. Logical thinking is believed to be the foundation of mathematics. It requires one to have the knowledge of how to organize and manipulate equations. Moreover, logical thinking is believed to be a learned mental process (Karl, 2009: 15).

In common, all these types are thinking styles. They end up providing one with ideas and decisions. They affect critical thinking in one way or the other. On the other hand, logical thinking is more consistent in solving problems and of sound reasoning as discussed above than the other two types. Persuasive thinking requires one to understand and be careful about all human aspects in order to win ones confidence to accept his or her message. Scientific thinking involves making decisions on the results one gets after observing and forming a hypothesis, performing experiments among others. In conclusion, logical thinking appears to be the superior. It also enables one to figure out what to do and does it in a reasonable and reflective manner hence affecting critical thinking process (Karl, 2009: 19).

These three types of thinking are applied in different situations to make ideas and decisions. It requires one to think critically to be in a position to solve a problem. The following are some of the instances where these types have been applied. The first instance is where a school director realizes that the students performance is poor because of high rate of indiscipline. He or she logically decides to approach the problem by instilling discipline and then providing reading materials to the students. Another instance is where a researcher performs an experiment to investigate the rate at which cervical cancer is contracted. Scientifically, he or she makes decisions depending on the results that one gets. In addition, another instance is where a car seller has to persuasively convince a customer to purchase the car. The seller has to win the confidence of the customer hence purchasing the car.

In conclusion, people face a lot of problems and need to know how to handle them. It is important for every person to think critically when handling a problem. Depending on the nature of the problem, one can apply any of the three types of thinking mentioned above. This helps one to make good and reliable decisions.
